Rocking It With Bangs

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Jennifer Hudson seems to be back to the swing of things! Not that she was taking a big break or anything, but it seems like things are getting really busy for her. She’s a style icon and from the looks of it, a hair enthusiast, because her hair is always on point! She always has the most stylish dos and is always looking great. Jennifer is making the media rounds with her new sponsorship of Weight Watchers! She’s lost some weight and is looking great as usual. She’s rocking long stresses with a precision cut bang. Very cute! In some interviews, you’ll see the hair sleek and straight and in some others, the hair is curled into a soft body wave. This is a great style that fits almost any woman.

If this is a look you’ll like to try with your lace wig, you can always have your wig made with the hair ventilated toward the face (ventilation refers to the hand knotting of hair onto the base of the cap). This way, you don’t have to style and bump the hair in your face everyday. The hair will naturally fall toward your face at all times. In terms of ordering, there’s just a few things we need to know to get your bangs exactly the way you want them. You can learn here on how to measure your lace wig for bangs.

The below picture shows a lace front wig which was ventilated with bangs framing the face. A great advantage of having your bangs ventilated toward your face, is that the bangs will lay very flat. These are longer bangs, per the client’s request, but you can have yours cut to your desired length.

Got Alopecia Areata? Learn How to Get Financial Support for Your Lace Wig

Friday, March 5th, 2010

You might be surprised to know that there are little financial resources out there to help adults with the purchase of lace wig hair prosthesis, also known popularly as lace wigs. Though some insurance companies do cover lace wigs, there may be a lot of stipulations on coverage or under-coverage in general. There is a great resource, however, available through the National Alopecia Areata Foundation Ascot Fund. The Ascot Fund was established to help adults and children with alopecia areata by providing financial assistance up to $500. We’ve had the pleasure of working with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) by providing lace wigs to their award recipients. Unlike many insurance company procedures, this is not a reimbursement plan so you do not have to come up with the funds upfront. We think this is just wonderful because this puts much less financial strain on the award recipients.

At the time of this writing, the program requires you to obtain an invoice from the company you choose for your custom hair piece. If you need help in customizing your lace wig hairpiece, please send an email and we will set up an appointment to go over your custom lace wig and provide you with the documentation you need to apply for the award. You can also fill out any one of our custom order forms to receive a quote or invoice. We can get started on your quote for the Foundation with this information. Keep in mind that we do include ongoing store promotions or discounts in your invoice.
Here are the steps to receive an invoice from us:

1)    Fill out a custom order form for your choice wig
2)    Add the order to your shopping cart
3)    The shopping cart will show your custom order details. Copy the entire order details
4)    Paste the order details into an email to us indicating your request for documentation for the NAAF’s Ascot Fund.

How a Precision Hair Cut Can Make All the Difference On Your Lace Wig.

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

We thought it would be great to share two pictures of the same lace wig before and after a precision hair cut. Well, we happen to think the style on picture #2 frames the mannequin’s face better by giving the style an updated and chic look. See how taking off just a few inches and styling really affect the final look? In the before picture, the hair is styled away from the face and the layers have little shape. With the precision cut, we add shape to the layers and style some of the hair toward the face.

You can have your lace wigs cut by a local stylist or order any one of our precision cut styles. If you don’t see a style you like, you can always order a custom lace wig with your own pictures. Keep in mind that we do need some good shots in order to duplicate the style. You can even send us an old wig to duplicate! Sometimes you just have that one wig that you can’t part with- you just love the density, the color, the cut, etc.  We can definitely make a duplicate for you to keep on hand.

When getting your lace wig cut, just remember to pick a professional that knows what they’re doing! Frankly, not every stylist knows how to cut hair well. Remember, the hair is not growing back so if it’s cut too short, for example, there’s no going back! Always err on the side of caution by ordering a slightly longer length to give the stylist room to work with.

Winterizing Your Hair, by Chaunteese

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Since having my new De Novo Hair full lace wig I have acquired a number of suggestions that will help clients keep their wig healthy and tangle free. Anyone who has spent even one single day in Chicago during the winter can contest to the brutality that Mother Nature unleashes on the body, skin and hair. That’s why here in Chi, we have to bundle up! However, the materials that our hats and coats are made from oftentimes are not friendly to our hair.  In fact, clients oftentimes, come in to the salon with breakage and evidence of unhealthy hair care.  What causes this breakage is friction, which is caused by movement between the materials of our garments which comes in contact with our hair.  This friction can also cause tangling with your hair addition, especially at the nape. However, there are ways to help reduce that friction: 1) Try to wear garments made from the material Satin or Silk.  So, before you put on your winter hat and coat, you should put on a silk or satin bonnet or scarf to protect your hair.  This will provide adequate protection, in most instances, against the drying effects of Mother Nature’s brutal winds and cold temperatures. In addition, this will reduce tangling as well as breakage. Stay warm and don’t worry so much about your hair!

September is Alopecia Areata Awareness Month!

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

This month we wanted to bring awareness to alopecia areata and shed some light on how De Novo Hair lace wigs can be used to help individuals affected by it. Alopecia areata is a hair-loss condition that is associated with an abnormality in the immune system. Particularly, one’s immune system attacks the hair follicles of the scalp generating partial or complete hair loss. This abnormality in hair formation, however, can also affect other areas of the body. Though the reason for its onset is unexplained, research suggests that genetics may play a role in the likelihood of developing this autoimmune condition. Alopecia areata also tends to develop in early life, with typical onset among children, teens and young adults.

Once diagnosed with alopecia areata, a number of treatments are available. The efficacy of these treatments varies as there is no proven remedy for its prevention. What has been shown to be particularly helpful are the ways in which patients cope with alopecia areata. Hair loss can contribute to increased emotional stress including depression. In a society where images of health, beauty and femininity are often associated with a healthy head of hair, hair loss can bring about many stressful situations and can adversely affect one’s self-concept. Even for those who are comfortable in their hair loss, they may not be as comfortable with the stereotyped identities others ascribe to them.

Many persons who can benefit the most from De Novo Hair full lace wigs or lace front wigs sometimes are not even aware of lace wigs as being a hair replacement option. Traditional wigs of yester years are notoriously very uncomfortable and restrictive in style and function. Many are “one size fits all” and there’s really no such thing when it comes to a well-designed and well-fitting hair replacement prosthetic. This is why you won’t get that classic tell-tale sign of unnatural bunching at the crown with a De Novo Hair lace wig. Our lace wigs fit to the contours of your head by circumference size and you can get the best fit by taking your full measurements. Because our lace wigs are fully hand-tied, you get a natural hair growth pattern. You can style it any which way and not have to worry about combing the hair toward your face to conceal your hairline.

If you think you might be experiencing signs of hair loss, do not hesitate to contact your doctor for more information about your particular condition. Some forms of hair loss can be treated well if damage to the hair follicles can be minimized. Your doctor can even write a prescription for your prosthetic and we will help with the rest! We love helping customers reclaim their self expression and identities through our high quality product line. If you have any tips, advice or comments, don’t forget to leave your mark and comment below!

Flat Ironing & Texture

Friday, August 7th, 2009

De Novo Hair offers the widest variety of hair textures that are suitable for women of all ethnicities. Our clients appreciate the choices they have in matching to their own hair texture or for trying out a new style. With curly or wavy styles, it is relatively easy to pick out a texture based on the curl pattern pictured. The task is more nuanced with straight hair especially since the differences can be more subtle. As with all human hair, it is important to note that the texture can change temporarily based on how the hair is styled, especially when using styling tools like flat irons or curling irons. The heat in these tools essentially changes the bond in the hair shaft. So you can start with the poofy Natural Relaxed texture and end up with Regular Relaxed tresses, based on the amount of heat used on the hair shaft. The important thing to remember about flat irons and the like is that hair is prone to damage from excessive heat and hair abuse just as your own naturally growing hair would be. You don’t want to use these tools too often and a heat protector should be used along with it. You basically don’t want to “fry” the hair to a limp state.

When deciding on a texture, pick one out based on your hair preference and the amount of grooming you think you’re up for. You can usually flat iron each texture to a silkier state. So for a Natural Relaxed, you can flat iron to a Coarse or Regular Relaxed. You can flat iron the Coarse relaxed to a Regular relaxed and so forth. The flat iron will smooth out the hair shaft.

We often get asked whether curly or wavy styles can be flat ironed. The answer is yes but there are some textures where we recommend against it. With afro curly and tight waves it is generally better to just have a second straight wig at hand than going through the labor of flat ironing out all the curls. As long as you have not brought about any heat damage to the hair, it will revert back to the curly state when moisture hits it again (humidity/washing etc.). However, the general rule of thumb is to avoid excessive heat on hair that has gone through chemical processing already. Extra curly hair typically needs more constant heat to straighten and this heat can contribute to dryness and breakage. This is why it’s just better to have a straight wig to alternate with. With the alternate use, both wigs will last longer.
